Description: The Aboriginal Justice Strategy (AJS) addresses the over-representation of Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system and assists Aboriginal communities to gain greater control over the administration of justice. It also represents the Department of Justice in self-government administration negotiations. Cost-sharing with provinces and territories, the AJS supports community-based justice programming, using diversion; sentencing alternatives; family and civil mediation; and, community justice worker programs. The training and development, and outreach components of the AJS enhance existing programs and heighten stakeholder and public awareness of Aboriginal justice issues.
